St. Augustine Amateur: Record-setting start gives McCain lead
St. Augustine, Fla. (Oct. 18, 2013) — The first round of the St. Augustine Amateur produced some fireworks on a soggy, but fantastic course Friday at St. John’s Golf Club.

Andrew McCain, started his round with four consecutive birdies to take an early lead.

“Dropping a 12-foot putt from the fringe on the 1st, 2-putt the par 5 2nd, a tap in on the 3rd, and 10 footer on the 4th was a great way to start,” said McCain.

His only blemish of the day was the par 5 9th. A tee shot off to the right by the tree forced a tough 2nd shot that ended up in the water. Not only did he lose a stroke, he lost his 5 iron for the rest of the round after hitting the tree on his swing.

That didn’t stop him as he birdied two more holes to finish 6-under, setting a Tournament Record Round.

McCain was energized about his round and stated “I drove it straight and had some great iron shots today. Tomorrow the game plan is to make some more putts and get off to another great start.”

Some of the other low scores came from the last tee time of the day with Grayson Murray and Spencer Schindler shooting 67’s.

“Round 2 will be another challenge, but continuing to hit greens and keep the ball below the hole will help me to score well. I’m really looking forward to the next 2 rounds,” Schindler said.

The only blemish was on the par 3 17th when he left the tee shot short and 2 putted for a bogey.

This sets the stage to what is expected to be a low scoring St. Augustine Amateur for the field. There are two more days and many more birdies to come in the 10th Anniversary of the event.
