Christopher Wilderotter paces the field at 1-over-par 69 as the country's oldest city championship gets underway

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (February 3, 2006) -- The one month golf extravaganza that is also known as the San Francisco City Championship kicked off today at 8:00am at a fog-swept Lincoln Park Golf Course. The event of the day was a pre-qualifier for entry into the Championship Division.

"Balls were plugging, it was hard to see the ball on the first few holes, and in the end we spent about six hours out there, but it was all worth it," said Greg Wardle, a North Beach resident who easily made the field at 74.

Lincoln Park is a par-68 that defends that number by balancing seemingly easy par 4's with one of the toughest set of par 3's in the Bay Area, including the famous 17th, which overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge. Add in the "playing the ball down in a wet San Francisco weather" effect and you wind up with a score of 1-over-par 69, posted by Christopher Wilderotter of Oakland, pacing the field. Nate Weidner and Eoghan Canniffe were right behind him at 70, and the final spot was won by Taylor Hoover, who emerged from a group of 8 players who were deadlocked at 77 via a sudden-death playoff.
