STEVINSON, Calif. (May 6, 2012) -- Matt Cohn of San Francisco posted a solid 71 to overtake first round leader Randy Haag and capture the 2012 California Mid-Amateur at Stevinson Ranch Golf Course. Cohn, a 2-time USGA participant (Amateur and Publinx) was recently fitted for a new set of Titleist AP2 irons and Project X shafts. (view Matt's "what's in the bag" profile here>)

Cohn, 31, finished 6th on the NCGA points list in 2011 but hadn't won an event since the 2009 Amateurgolf.com Metropolitan Amateur. He described his play on Sunday as "Pretty stress free, lots of fairways and greens, good driving, and no three putts."

That kind of golf goes a long way at the Stevinson Ranch, where in Saturday's windy first round players were struggling to make pars, and avoid big numbers. Sunday was a better golf day, but Stevinson is plenty of golf course even in calm conditions. Cohn made up ground on first round leader Haag (also of San Francisco) and by the 15th had a 1-shot lead. When Haag found the hazard left and Cohn made par, the lead was three. After that, Cohn played solid golf through "The Gauntlet" (holes 16,17, and 18) and brought home a 5-stroke win over Haag. (151) In third place in the overall championship (Mid- Am and Masters players competing for the same NCGA points) were two very solid players -- Ricky Stockton of Salinas and Adam Petrocelli of Monterey. Both finished at 8-over 152.

MASTERS DIVISION:

Randy Haag, 53, captured the Masters division, for players age 40-54. Steve Donnelly of Salinas was 2nd at 156. Players in this division played the same tees as the Mid-Am players and were eligible for the overall NCGA Points.

SENIOR DIVISION:

Casey Boyns of Pacific Grove leveraged an eagle pitch from 45 yards on the par-4 14th hole (know as "Alps" for the large mound in front of the green) to win post a final round 71 and two round total of 4-over 148. As Cohn did in taking the overall title, Boyns overtook the first round leader (Jim Knoll of Sunnyvale) to win by three. Knoll posted rounds of 74-77=151; Terry Foreman of Antioch was another shot back in third (78- 74=152) in his first official senior event.

NET DIVISION:

A third turnaround took place in the Net Division, with Korsen Yu (80-74=154) capturing a 2-shot victory over Scott Carelli. Lyle Covino took third place among net players.
