VandenBerg survives a tense final round at Silverado, holding off a late charge to claim the Senior title
Silverado Resort & Spa delivered a scenic and demanding test for the 10th Founders Cup. The North Course — a 1966 Robert Trent Jones Jr. design redesigned by Johnny Miller — challenged players with thick rough and firm, tricky greens. This marks the first of three straight years the Society of Seniors will visit the venue, home of the PGA Tour’s Procore Championship.
Senior Division
Kevin VandenBerg, of Pulaski, N.Y., the No.1 ranked player on the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com Senior rankings for a straight second year, held on to win the Senior Division at 218 (+2), edging runner-up David Glabicki, of Cary, N.C., by one. Glabicki closed with a bogey-free 69, the low round of the tournament, and narrowly missed a tying birdie putt on 18. Stephen Maddalena, of Jackson, Mich., finished third at 220 (+4).
“I didn’t have my best stuff today, but it was good enough,” said VandenBerg, whose key moment came with a two-under 70 on the South Course — the only under-par round of day two. He admitted the final holes were tense: “I three-putted 12 to get back to one shot and just hung on. The drive on 18 wasn’t great, but I two-putted from 50 feet.”
VandenBerg added that he and his wife have already booked their return for next year.
Super Senior Division
Richard Kerper, of Oldsmar, Fla., pulled away late to win the Super Senior Division at 221 (+5), four shots clear of Todd Palmaer, of Carmel, Calif. Palmaer led early but a late double bogey shifted momentum, while Kerper birdied 17 to close strongly. Gregory Goode, of Salina, Kan., finished third at 228 (+12) after playing his final two rounds even par.
“I started poorly but just kept grinding,” Kerper said. “My short game carried me today.” He praised the venue and its setup: “The courses were in great shape. Challenging rough, but very fair.”
Legend Division
Michael Jonson, of Sammamish, Wash., captured the Legend Division at 222 (+6), five ahead of Mark Weston, of Windermere, Fla., who finished at 227 (+11). Jonson’s two-under opening nine in the final round provided a cushion he never relinquished.
“I thought the greens were very difficult today, and I didn’t putt well,” he said. “But it’s a great venue and I’m happy to come away with the win.”
Dan Parkinson, of Lehi, Utah, placed third at 230 (+14).
Super Legend Division
Michael Mahoney, of La Jolla, Calif., won the Super Legend title on the second playoff hole over Sam Robinson, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Robinson’s even-par 72 forced extra holes after Mahoney made his first double bogey of the tournament late in regulation. Mahoney sealed the win with a 12-foot birdie on the second playoff hole.
“It was nice to make that putt after not finishing well in regulation,” Mahoney said. “It’s always great coming to Silverado.”
