Mirabel Ting of Florida State shot a 5-under 67 in the first round of the 2024 Maybank Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club’s West Course. This is the collegiate junior's LPGA debut.

She got off to a hot start, birding four of the first five holes to propel up the leaderboard immediately. She is T11 heading into the second round.

She made birdies on holes No. 1, 3, 4, 5, 14, and 18 with just one bogey, the par-5 No. 10.

Florida State University standout Mirabel Ting is set to make her highly anticipated LPGA debut at the 2024 Maybank Championship, held at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club’s West Course. Ting, a rising star in amateur golf and Malaysia’s highest-ranked female amateur enters this event in the midst of an impressive collegiate season. She stands as one of four Malaysian players in the 78-player field and the only amateur, showcasing her rapid ascent in the global golf scene.

"This is my first LPGA event and easily the most significant tournament of my career so far,” said Ting. “The fact that it's on home soil makes it even more special. I'll have friends and family there, including my grandfather, which adds so much meaning to this opportunity.”

This week’s Maybank Championship marks the third stop on the LPGA’s fall Asian swing. It also serves as a return to familiar turf for Ting, who has previously competed on the West Course, though her experience at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club has primarily been on the East Course. Known for her powerful ball-striking, Ting has focused on refining her short game as she prepares for this challenge against the world’s best.

“I feel confident in my long game,” Ting added. “It’s the short game where I’ve been putting in the extra hours. It’s about sharpening up my up-and-down play and staying consistent on the greens.”

The 2024 Maybank Championship follows the dramatic conclusion of last year’s event, where Celine Boutier defeated Jeeno Thitikul in a nine-hole playoff. Ting will be competing in a field that includes several of the LPGA’s top players, such as Hannah Green, who won the recent BMW Ladies Championship, and Ruoning Yin, the Buick LPGA winner.

A Breakout Year for Ting
Mirabel Ting’s LPGA debut caps off a standout year of achievements. Currently ranked No. 8 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), Ting has been a driving force behind Florida State’s success in collegiate golf. Her performances this year include two victories and several top-10 finishes in major amateur events, underscoring her status as one of the game's brightest young talents.

Ting’s 2024 season highlights include a victory at the prestigious Augusta Women’s Invitational and a T8 finish at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She also claimed first place at the Women's Orlando International and posted strong showings in collegiate events, such as the ACC Women's Championship and the Moon Golf Invitational.

Her 2023 season was equally impressive, with a win at the Moon Golf Invitational and notable finishes at the NCAA Women's South Regional (T5) and the Florida Gators Women’s Invitational (T5). Ting’s consistent ability to compete at the highest level has helped her ascend rapidly in the global rankings, making her a key player for Florida State’s golf program.
