As the boom of Wisconsin golf continues, the U.S. Amateur and two other USGA events are heading to Whistling Straits
Whistling Straits, the iconic links-style course in Kohler, Wisconsin, has been selected by the USGA to host three major amateur championships over the next decade. The first will be the 2028 U.S. Amateur, followed by the 2033 U.S. Junior Amateur and the 2037 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships.
This decision marks a significant continuation of the relationship between the USGA and Whistling Straits, a course that has already proven its mettle on the international stage. "We’re thrilled to renew our commitment with Kohler," said Mark Hill, USGA’s managing director of Championships. "Whistling Straits is globally recognized for its challenging design and we’re confident it will provide a fitting test for the world’s top amateur players."
Owned and operated by Kohler Co., Whistling Straits is one of the premier public golf facilities in the country, with a rich history of hosting major tournaments. The course, sculpted by renowned architects Pete and Alice Dye along the shores of Lake Michigan, evokes the rugged charm of traditional Irish links golf. Over the years, it has hosted four major championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup, solidifying its place among the elite courses in the United States.
Whistling Straits' pedigree includes hosting champions like Vijay Singh (2004 PGA Championship), Brad Bryant (2007 U.S. Senior Open), Martin Kaymer (2010 PGA Championship), and Jason Day (2015 PGA Championship). It also witnessed the triumphant return of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2021.
The course's transformation from a former U.S. Army training facility in the 1950s to a world-class golf destination is a testament to Kohler Co.’s vision. Since opening to the public in 1998, Whistling Straits has continuously pushed the boundaries of American golf course design, and the upcoming USGA championships will further enhance its storied legacy.
Dirk Willis, vice president of Golf, Landscape & Retail at Kohler Co., expressed excitement about the upcoming events. "Partnering with the USGA to bring these prestigious championships to Whistling Straits is a tremendous honor," said Willis. "Amateur and junior golf are the lifeblood of the sport, and we are thrilled to welcome these talented players to Wisconsin over the next decade."
Wisconsin has hosted 17 USGA championships to date, including the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills. As the state continues solidifying its reputation as a premier golfing destination, Whistling Straits will remain the center of attention.
Here’s what to look forward to at Whistling Straits:
2028 U.S. Amateur Championship (Aug. 14-20)
2033 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship (July 25-30)
2037 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship (July 13-18)
Each event will draw the best amateur and junior golfers from around the world, all vying for a chance to add their names to the course's growing legacy.
The U.S. Amateur, the oldest USGA championship, was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. The event, which has no age restriction, is open to those with a Handicap Index of .4 (point four) or lower. It is one of 15 national champ...
