The Spaniard birdied No. 17 to edge out the field by one shot
Luis Masaveu Roncal of Alcobendas, Spain won the 2024 Portuguese International Amateur Championship at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort in Penina, Portimao, Portugal, by one shot over Abel Derksen of the Netherlands.
Masaveu Roncal, ranked 41 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings, won the 2023 individual title at the prestigious Tailhade Cup in Argentina, and finished runner-up at the Lytham Trophy. He was selected to compete in the LIV Golf Promotions event in Abu Dhabi before reaching his 21st birthday which came a week later in December.
At Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, he finished 11-under after rounds of 68-68-70 through 54 holes.
Normally a 72-hole event, the championship was shortened due to high wind and rains from Storm Karlotta, which caused Portugal's Civil Protection Agency to place the entire country under high alert. (The storm, which hit Portugal via Norway, made surfers happy - producing 50-foot swells)
Roncal shot 3-under 70 in the final round, recording five birdies and two bogeys. He made a birdie on the par-5 hole No. 17 to take a two-shot lead over the field, and a par on No. 18 secured the victory.
Derksen shot rounds of 68-69-72 to finish in solo second place.
Richard Teder of Estonia finished in solo third place at 9-under. Carl Siemens of Germany and Jorge Siyuan Hao of Spain finished T4 at 8-under. Pablo Alperi Lopez of Spain finished in solo sixth place at 7-under.
The Netherlands team, made up of Abel Derksen and Denny Kloeth, had secured victory in the “Nations Cup”, ahead of Italy III and Germany.
