The 107th Southwestern Amateur will mark the 10th straight tournament that Desert Mountain has played host
Many PGA Tour legends have participated in the event over the years as well as current stars such as Collin Morikawa, Bryson DeChambeau, and Max Homa. Last year, the event was proud to introduce a Women’s Division. In year one, the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) gave the women a power rating that placed them as one of the top 10 amateur tournaments in the country.
The fields consist of juniors, mid-ams, and collegiate players from universities in the west and southwest with players coming from all corners of the globe. This includes players from 37 states and seven different countries. Both divisions will have 72 players with a cut to the top 36 and ties following the second day of play.
In year two of the women's championship, a strong field has once again been assembled. Last week's Women's Porter Cup champion Katie Cranston of Canada is in the field, along with reigning Big Ten champ Monet Chun and reigning Arizona Silver Belle champion Leigh Chien.
In addition, two players arrive at Desert Mountain fresh off of competing in the U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles in North Carolina: Bailey Davis and Lauren Gomez.
For the men, the two top-ranked players, according to the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings, who will be on hand at Desert Mountain are Australia's Toby Walker and UC Davis junior Lucas Carper. Walker, traveling from Australia to compete in the U.S. this summer, is coming off a top-25 finish at the Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. while Carper recently tied for third at the Memorial Amateur in Sacramento, Calif.
Reigning Saguaro Amateur champion Carson Enright is in the field, as well as Sonoran Amateur winner Gabriel Salvanera and reigning State Fair Amateur champion Kuangyu Chen.
Other highly-ranked players include Tucker Allen, Tony Chen, and Jimmy Dales.
Spectators are welcome and play begins at 7:30 a.m. The second wave of players on Wednesday and Thursday will start at 12:00 p.m. AmateurGolf.com will have reporter and photographer Conner Penfold on site for the final two rounds of the Southwestern Amateur.
