The amateur golf season in the Texas/Southwest version is just starting to get into full swing, so we at amateurgolf.com decided it's about time to preview one of our most popular regions, with a look at the majors and a full calendar listing of all the events in this area.
We start with our friends at the Carlton Woods Invitational (info, results) which will be held this year May 13-15 at The Club at Carlton Woods. We traveled to Houston for last year's event, and were privileged to see some great displays of golf from tourney winner Jonathan Mathias (the Texas South Regional Player of the Year) and Bob Hullender (profile) who, at 70-years-old, was still driving the ball better than most of the mid-ams.
Mathias was the winner of another of our favorite events, the Harvey Penick Invitational (info, results), named after the Texas legend who became assistant pro of the Austin Country Club (the host course) at the age of 13 and head pro in 1923 after graduating college. Mathias won the tournament for the second year in a row in 2007, topping Michael Cooper by three strokes.
The sole USGA event for this region is the Senior Amateur (info, results), held September 20-25 at the Shady Oaks Country Club in Ft. Worth. We would also be remiss not to mention the Texas State Amateur, held at the Houston Country Club June 5-8, which will feature Charlie Holland, the son of Texas Golf Association president Malcolm Holland, defending his title.
