Golf never stops in Florida, and neither does the amateur golf season, which has already been in full swing since the start of 2008. With that in mind, we'll start this amateurgolf.com Florida/Southeast preview a bit differently, with a look back at a handful of majors already in the books.

One of the more interesting events was the Jones/Doherty Women's Amateur (info, results) which saw a trio of Lendl sisters, daughters of tennis great Ivan Lendl, battling it out in the match play portion of the event, which was held at the Country Club of Ocala. In the end, it was 16-year-old Isabelle Lendl defeating both younger sister Daniela in the round of 16, and her older sister Marika (the reigning champ) in the semifinals.

Kelly Calkin, who won the 2007 Women's South Atlantic Amateur (The Sally) (info, results), teamed with Kristy McLaughlin to defeat Curtis Cupper Meghan Bolger and Jill Hardy in 20 holes at the Women's International Four-Ball (info, results) held at the Orangebrook Golf and Country Club in Florida. England's Liz Bennett took this year's Sally.

Also contested were the Dixie Amateur Championship (info, results), Harder Hall Women's Invitational (info, results) and the New Year's Invitational (info, results).

Moving forward, but staying in-state, we start for selfish reasons with the St. Augustine Amateur (info), which may not be the biggest of the Florida majors, but it's our favorite since it's run by amateurgolf.com Florida and Southeast Region Manager Jay Jennison.

With a field limited to 84 of the top junior and amateur players in the region (approved by a tournament committee) and played at the St. John's Golf Club, the tourney was won by 19-year-old South Florida student Danny Evelyn.

Just making the field at The Masters (info) is a pinnacle accomplishment in many a pro's career, but seeing one's name on that scoreboard is also an attainable goal for top-shelf amateur players. This year, three will make the trip: Trip Kuehne courtesy of his U.S. Mid-Am victory, Michael Thompson courtesy of his runner-up in the U.S. Amateur and Drew Weaver, the British Amateur champ. Colt Knost, the winner of both the U.S. PubLinx and the U.S. Amateur, elected to turn pro before the event, eliminating his chance to compete as an am.

Alabama plays host to the region's only USGA event, the USGA Boy's Junior Amateur (info), which will be held at the Shoal Creek Country Club. Last year, 15-year-old Cory Whitsett defeated fellow Texan Anthony Paolucci 8 & 7 to take the title at the Boone Valley Country Club in Missouri.
