SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 6, 2018) - Greg O'Malley of Sonoma shot a 2-under 70 to earn medalist honors at San Francisco City Senior Qualifying at TPC Harding Park.
O'Malley birdied four out of six holes in the middle of his round starting at the 9th to spark his round.
James Camaione of Upland shot a 1-under 71 to qualify second, while 2016 Senior champion Randy Haag of Orinda shot a 72 to qualify third. 2008 champion Jim Knoll of Sunnyvale was among a group of players tied for fourth at 1-over 73.
2012 and 2014 champion Jim Williams of Orinda shot a 76 and advanced through to match play.
31 players advanced through qualifying (plus the defending champion Gary Vanier), and the cut fell at 7-over 79.
With 30 players shooting 78 or better, only one spot was available for all of the players who shot 79, and so a massive 12-for-1 playoff was held. In the end, John Friend of Los Altos emerged as the final qualifier and will face O'Malley in the first round of match play on Wednesday morning.
In the Super Senior qualifier, Mark Miller of Brentwood shot a 76 to medal by a single shot over Mike Parnow and Herb Jensen. Miller (2011) and Jensen (2010) are both former San Francisco City Senior champions.
15 players advanced through the qualifier to join the defending Super Senior champion Ron Johnson of Walnut Creek. The cut fell at 8-over 80 and, as there were exactly 15 players at that number or better, no playoff was needed to set the match play bracket.
The Super Senior match play round of 16 will be played this Sunday at TPC Harding Park.
