Wake Forest freshman Jennifer Kupcho earned medalist honors
WILMINGHAM, NC (October 30, 2016) -- It came down to a scorecard playoff but after the numbers were crunched it was South Carolina claiming The Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall's Dye Course. Wake Forest ended the 54-holes of regulation tied with South Carolina at 5-under but the Gamecocks were named champions after the cards were compared.
South Carolina and Wake Forest were the only teams to finish under-par; Furman (+2) was third, Purdue (+8) was fourth while Oklahoma (+13) placed fifth.
Leading the South Carolina charge this weekend was senior and 2016 ANNIKA Award runner-up Katelyn Dambaugh, who finished tied for fifth at 4-under. A force since her freshman year, Dambaugh rebounded from a first round 78 to close with consecutive 5-under 67's. Her final day scorecard included seven birdies and two bogeys.
Junior Ainhoa Olarra (-2; T8) and freshman Ana Pelaez (-1; T11) also played well and helped lift South Carolina to their first win of the season.
On Sunday the Gamecocks posted an 8-under 280 to record the lowest 18-hole score in The Landfall Tradition's history.
Wake Forest might have ended up second in the team standings but sophomore Jennifer Kupcho was still able to pick up her second individual win of the season. Kupcho, who won the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational earlier in the month, carded rounds of 73-66-68 to post 9-under and win by three-strokes.
The final round for last years Honorable Mention All-American was nearly flawless as she birdied five times and bogeyed once.
Purdue's August Kim was second at 6-under, India Clyburn of North Carolina State and Alabama's Cheyenne Knight were tied for third at 5-under while Sierra Sims of Wake Forest and Dambaugh shared fifth at 4-under.
