Arevalo runs away with California State Fair Women's title

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2018) – Last season at San Jose State, Abegail Arevalo broke through for her first collegiate victory. On Sunday, Arevalo added another line on her resume with a major amateur title. The Spartan junior from the Philippines topped the California State Fair Championship by a stunning seven shots at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course.

Arevalo opened with 1-under 70 in the first round of the championship, and entered the final round trailing Marni Murez, a junior at Santa Clara, by one shot. But Arevalo’s score dove in the final round. She came back with 65 to finish the event with a 7-under 135 total, seven shots better than runners-up Murez and Franziska Fredrich.

A year ago, Arevalo fell one shot short of champion Vanessa Ha. Arevalo went on to lead her San Jose State team in scoring as a sophomore, and ended the season with an individual berth in the NCAA San Francisco Regional. She was San Jose was a first-team All-Mountain West selection. Her first collegiate victory came in March, when she won the MountainView Collegiate with a 3-under 213.

Ariell Swan was solo fourth with a 143 total, and Alexa Clark, who was tied with Arevalo after the first round, tied for fifth overall with Nao Bando. They were at 144.

Krista Wylder won the handicap flight by five shots over Mieko Rogers and Cynthia Stefani was the senior flight champion.

ABOUT THE California State Fair Women's

The Sacramento Golf Council presents the 2018 State Fair Women's Championship at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course on September 1 and 2, 2018.

The tournament is open to all women amateur golfers age 18 or older by September 1, 2018, with an established USGA Handicap Index of 37.4 or less, members of a college golf team or by special invitation. Handicaps will be based on August 15 indexes and played to the lower of the USGA Handicap Index or Tournament Index (Modified USGA rules).

The field is limited to the first 100 paid entries by the August 22, 2018 deadline - no refunds after this date. The cancellation refund assessment fee is $20.

The Championship Flight contestants must have an index of 4.0 or less and will play at scratch from the back (blue) tees. Senior Flight(s), age 60+, determined by handicap or age (entries permiting) and Handicap Flight(s) will play using handicaps from the forward (black tees). Ties for overall low gross, overall low net and overall senior low net will be decided in a hole-by-hole playoff. All other ties will be decided based on the USGA recommended method (Rule 33-6, Decision of Ties).

Entry fees are $125 per person for non Capitol City Play Card holders; $120 for Capitol City Play Card holders or $115 for Seniors 60+ with Senior Capitol City Play Card. The entry fee includes two (2) days green fees and awards (power cart not included).
