After an MC in his only other try the Illinois senior had a chance to play the weekend in a PGA Tour event for the first time
PALM HARBOR, FL (March 11, 2018) - After just barely making the cut on Friday Dylan Meyer carded rounds of 76-71 on the weekend to finish 7-over and tied for 74th at the Valspar Championship.
The made cut marked the first time in Meyer's career that he has reached the weekend in a PGA Tour event after falling short previously at the 2017 John Deere Classic.
A senior at Illinois, Meyer played a solid final round rolling in three birdies and three bogeys. He was cruising along at 2-under for the day through 14-holes before struggling down the stretch with 15th and 18th hole bogeys.
The birdies for Meyer came on the 5th, 7th and 11th holes with all the putts coming from between 10-15 feet.
SECOND ROUND RECAP
The cut at the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship feel at 3-over which means Illinois senior Dylan Meyer will be around for the weekend. After opening with a 1-under 70 on Thursday at the Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course Meyer had to battle on day two, especially down the stretch to hold on to his spot in the weekend field.
Beginning on No. 10 Meyer played his first nine holes in 1-over 36 with just one bogey to his name and after a birdie on the 2nd hole, his 11th, to move back to even-par for the day and 1-under for the tournament it seemed as if the Illini standout would ease into the weekend.
However, that would not be the case and Meyer soon found himself in survivor mode as he bogeyed the next three holes to fall all the way back to 2-over. A par on the 6th helped Meyer right the ship and then on the ensuing hole in poured in a 15'6'' birdie putt to give himself some much needed breathing room that proved to be much needed as he bogeyed the 9th hole, his last.
Meyer had to play the waiting game on Friday after going out early and in the end he was awarded with a third round tee time. On Saturday he tee off at 8:55 a.m. playing with Ben Martin.
A second amateur in the the field was Georgia Tech sophomore Ty Strafaci who carded rounds of 75-76 to post 9-over for two rounds. Strafaci did show some flashes birdieing Nos. 11 and 14 on Friday.
ROUND ONE RECAP
University of Illinois senior Dylan Meyer (Evansville, IN) shot a 1-under 70 in the first round to break into the top 10 oat the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort.
Playing with professionals Aaron Wise and Zinjun Zhang, Meyer birdied the first hole, bogeyed the next two, then birdied 5, 11, and 13 with a bogey on 12.
Scoring conditions were tough, as the lead score was just 4 under. Meyer's round puts him in 8th place, tied with a large group of players that includes Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Jim Furyk, Justin Rose and Adam Scott. University of Illinois alumnus Steve Stricker is also at 1 under after round one.
Meyer will play in the morning wave for round two, going off the 10th tee at 8:51am, the last group of the morning.
Meyer earned his spot into the Valspar field by winning last year's 3M Augusta Invitational.
