Decker defends his title in a rain-shortened championship, as he and Occi beat the field by seven shots
HAYMARKET, VA (August 9, 2017) - Keith Decker (Martinsville, VA) defended his title at the Dave King Senior Invitational, shooting rounds of 69-68 to hold off Mike Occi (Columbia, MD) by a single shot at Evergreen Country Club.
Last year Decker coasted to a five-shot win, but this time Occi stayed with him every step of the way. The two quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field, and turned it into a two-man race.
Bad weather forced a cancellation of the first round and turned the tournament into a 36-hole affair. Decker and Occi both shot 69s in round one to lead by two shots over Leon Roday (Henrico, VA) and Ron Clatterbuck (Haymarket, VA).
In round two, Roday, Clatterbuck and the rest of the field fell back as Decker and Occi forged ahead.
In the end, Decker's 68 edged Occi's 69 for the title. Michael O'Donnell (Atlanta, GA) and Tim Vigotsky (Centerville, VA) finished seven shots behind Occi in third place at 145.
In the Super Senior Division, James Castagna (Sandy Spring, MD) shot consecutive 73s for a three shot win over Wyatt Meyer (Lutz, FL) and Jeff Johns (Haymarket, VA).
In the Legends Division, Jim Jacobi (Arlington, VA) was a playoff winner over George Washburn (Frederick, MD) after both players finished at 138, one shot ahead of Frank Guise (Westlake, OH).
