Legendary caddie Willie McRae has his photo hanging
in the main walkway through the clubhouse at
Pinehurst. Now, he's a member of the Carolinas Golf
Hall Of Fame.
McRae has caddied for five presidents, many
celebrities, and legendary golfers like Bobby Jones,
Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer.
When
Peter Uihlein was coming up through the amateur
ranks 5-10 years ago, his father Wally (the CEO of
Acushnet) always requested McRae. There's nothing
like experience. And McRae has been walking the
fairways of Pinehurst for seven decades. Amazing!

He even survived a round caddying for me,
during a rainstorm that left both of us drenched to
the bone. And to his credit, he never lost his
enthusiasm for the game, even though it was just a
ceremonial match and there were more than a few
"others" recorded. The photo above says
it all.
“I got tired of working on the farm so
hard so when I was 10 my daddy asked me if I
would like to caddy and I said
‘yeah,”’ McRae said.
“I’ve met so many good people that I
wouldn’t have met on a regular job.
Everybody has been so nice.”
Congratulations Willie - we'll see you next time
we visit Pinehurst.
