Mike Occi takes stays hot at Kingsway Senior

LAKE SUZY, FL (January 14, 2017) -- Well the first half of January couldn't have been more successful for Mike Occi (Columbia, MD). First he won the Gateway Senior Invitational and then just four days later he claimed the Kingsway Senior Invitational with a 54-hole 1-over tally.

Playing at Kingsway Country Club, Occi brought a three-stroke lead into the final round and despite a final round 3-over 75 he was still able to extend his lead and win by six-strokes.

Finishing a distant second at 7-over were Herb Fisher (The Woodlands, TX) and Steve Humphrey (Lexington, KY) while James Starnes (Fort Myers, FL) and John Vaccaro (Sarasota, FL) were 8-over and in a share of fourth place.

The Super Senior Division was claimed by the even-par Paul Schlachter (Bridgeville, PA). Schlachter began the day two off the pace but with an even-par 72 he was able to overcome the deficit and win by a shot over Tim Miller (Venice, FL).

In the Legends Division George Washburn (Fredrick, MD) rallied to win by four shots. Washburn closed with a his round of the week, an even-par 72.

Charles Busbee (Stockbridge, GA) and George Owens (Virginia Beach, VA) shared second.

ROUND TWO RECAP

After two rounds Mike Occi (Columbia, MD) is 2-under and leading the Kingsway Senior Invitational by three-strokes.

Teeing it up at Kingsway Country Club, Occi overcame a one-stoke deficit at the start of the day to take the 36-hole lead thanks to a 2-under 70.

Herb Fisher (The Woodlands, TX) is set to begin Saturday's round in second place at 2-over. Six-strokes back and in third place are Greg Shires (Estero, FL) and first round co-leader Steve Humphrey (Lexington, KY).

The 6-over fifth place position is being held by John Vaccaro (Sarasota, FL) and Thursday's co-leader William Charpek (Red Bank, NJ).

The Super Senior Division is being paced by the 2-under Jim deLeon (Bluffton, SC). Thus far deLeon has tallied consecutive rounds of 1-under 71. Tim Miller (Venice, FL) is one back in second place and Paul Schlachter (Bridgeville, PA) is in third place at even-par. Both Miller and Schlachter were tied for the lead after the first round with deLeon.

In the Legends Division Joe Povoni (Prospect, KY) continues to lead the way with one round remaining. Povoni is 6-over and one shot in front of Charles Busbee (Stockbridge, GA). In third place at 9-over it is George Washburn (Fredrick, MD).

Saturday's final round shotgun at Kingsway Country Club will begin at 8:15 am.

ROUND ONE RECAP

Steve Humphrey (Lexington, KY) and William Charpek (Red Bank, NJ) both fired 1-under 71's in the first round of the Kingsway Senior Invitational and they share first place. Playing at Kingsway Country Club the duo will carry a one-stroke lead into the second round.

For Humphrey, this is already his third AmateurGolf.com Ranking event of the season and he has previously finished T9 at the Gateway Senior Invitational and 13th the Old Corkscrew Senior.

Charpek, who finished 43rd in the 2016 AmateurGolf.com Senior Rankings is looking to build off a strong season. His best finish was a T3 at The Hesler.

Herb Fisher (The Woodlands, TX) and last weekends Gateway Senior Invitational winner Mike Occi (Columbia, MD) are sharing third at even-par. The top-five is rounded out by the 1-over James Starnes (Fort Myers, FL).

In the Super Senior Division Jim deLeon (Bluffton, SC), Paul Schlachter (Bridgeville, PA) and Tim Miller (Venice, FL) are tied for the lead at 1-over. The trio has a two-stroke lead after the opening 18 holes over three others.

The Legends Division is being paced by the 1-under Joe Povoni (Prospect, KY). Povoni is three-strokes in front of Jerry Jackson (Sarasota, FL).

54-hole stroke play event created by Virginia's Dave King, now part of the Senior Florida Swing.

Entries are open by invitation only to amateur golfers who have a verifiable handicap of eight (8) or less. Seniors: age 55 & above; Super Seniors: age 65 & above; Legends: age 70 & above; Super Legends: age 75 and above.
