Angel Hidalgo wins Spanish Iron Gate National Cup

CADIZ, Spain (November 27, 2016) -- Early Sunday morning top-seed Angel Hidalgo finally found out who his opponent would be in the Spanish Iron Gate National Cup title match. After play was halted Saturday with the second semifinal match all-square through 18-holes, No. 54 Borja Martin and No. 42 Ignacio Montero returned to La Canada Golf Club to resume play and on the 21st hole it was Martin finally punching his ticket to the finals.

In the 99th playing of the Spanish Iron Gate National Cup, Martin put up a valiant fight in the championship match but in the end Hidalgo continued his superb play and etched his name onto the trophy by way of a 2&1 victory. The title match was reduced to 18-holes in anticipation of heavy afternoon rains.

With the win Hidalgo was able to add to a trophy case that already included the 2016 Spanish Stroke Play trophy.


Top-seed Angel Hidalgo is through to the Spanish Iron Gate National Cup finals but he still awaits his opponent. With the second semifinal match on the closing hole of La Canada Golf Club play had to halted with everything all-squared between No. 54 Borja Martin and No. 42 Ignacio Montero.

The two will decide the final spot in the championship match when play resumes on Sunday morning. Once the semifinal match concludes the title tilt will follow.

Hidalgo, the winner of the 2016 Spanish Stroke Play, advanced to the championship match after earning a 3&1 semifinal victory with a win on the 17th hole that closed out No. 45 Sigot F. Lopez.

Throughout his run to the finals Hidalgo has had a handful of close calls and in other cases he has been able to flex his muscles. In the first two rounds Hidaglo survived with 19 hole and 1 up victories before winning his next two matches 7&6 and 6&5.

Borja Martin made it to the semifinals with a series of tight triumphs. Martin won his first two matches in 19 holes and then his third 1 up. The quarterfinal match was a bit easier as Martin advanced with a 3&2 triumph against 51-seed Jorge Maicas.

Ignacio Montero has moved on in fairly comfortable fashion registering 2 up, 3&2, 1 up and 3&2 wins. The final win came over No. 50 Victor Miron in the quarterfinals.
