HONOLULU, HI (September 18, 2016) -- Tyler Ota overcame a one-stroke deficit to take home the 2016 Mayor Cup. Ota finished 4-under thanks to a 1-under 69 in the final round at Ala Wai Golf Course.
Ota, who also won the 107th Manoa Cup in June, started his round with a run of pars before picking up the first of his three birdies on No. 6. Birdies on the 9th and 16th saw Ota twice reach 5-under only to drop a shot on the ensuing hole each time.
Former University Hawaii player Scotty Yamashita began the day with the lead but struggled off the bat with three front nine bogeys that dropped him to 1-under. Yamashita attempted to make a run with birdies on Nos. 10 and 14 but a bogey on the 14th put an end to his back nine surge.
Nick Matsushima was the only other player in red figures at 1-under and in third, Brandan Kop was even-par in fourth while Andrew Chin, Carl Ho and Mike Kawate were 4-over and tied for fifth.
ROUND ONE RECAP
Former University of Hawaii player Scotty Yamashita has taken the first round lead at the Mayor's Cup. Yamashita posted a 4-under 66 on Saturday at the Ala Wai Golf Course and will take a one-stroke lead into the final round.
Beginning on the 10th hole Yamashita birdied two and bogeyed one to turn in 1-under. On his back nine Yamashita birdied four more and bogeyed one. The birdies came on the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th holes.
Tyler Ota, after a five birdie, two bogey day is 3-under and in second place while Jeren Nishimoto is two back at 2-under thanks to four birdies and two bogeys.
Yamashita, Ota and Nisimoto are the only three players under-par after the first day.
Three players; Nick Matsushima, Andy Okita and Kyle Yawata are all tied for fourth at 1-over.
