Vanderbilt comes from behind; Auburn's Michael Johnson is medalist
STATESBORO, GA (March 20, 2016)--No. 13 Vanderbilt (823) took the Schenkel Invitational by ten after a strong final day of play. No. 13 Wake Forest (833), the first round leader, finished in second place.
The Commodores placed four golfers in the top seven. Vanderbilt was led by freshman Will Gordon (-13) who finished second after losing in a playoff to medalist winner Michael Johnson of Auburn. Gordon shot up the leader board on the final day with a 9-under par round of 63.
Gordon, a sectional qualifier for the 2014 U.S. Open, came out of the gates quickly with a birdie on No. 1. It was the first of his nine birdies on the day. He birdied five on the front side including three straight from No. 5 to No. 7 as he carded a 31.
On the back nine Gordon continued to swelter with four more birdies. He put an exclamation on his round with a final hole birdie. Gordon jumped up 20 places in the standings on the final day.
Also finishing in the top seven for Vanderbilt were sophomore Theo Humphrey (-10) who finished in sixth. Freshman Patrick Martin (-9) and junior Matthias Schwab (-9) both tied for third.
Auburn's junior Michael Johnson (-13), a 2015 All-SEC performer, began the day in first place alone. But after a Sunday 2-under par 70 Johnson and Gordon needed a playoff to settle things. It didn't take long as Johnson captured his third win of the season with a victory on the second playoff hole. It was also his fifth career win.
Tying for third place were Kentucky and North Carolina State (839) while No. 2 Auburn (841) rounded out the top 5 finishing fifth. Auburn had led after the second round with Georgia State (842) who finished sixth.
The only other top 25 team in the field this week was No. 17 North Carolina (848) in eighth.
