Tournament Overview

The Baltusrol Invitational has become a national and international event with teams competing from throughout the United States, Scotland, England, Canada and Bermuda. The field consists mainly of mid-amateur level players who compete as two man teams over 54 holes on both the Upper and Lower Courses. The first day format consists of better ball in the morning round and foursomes (alternate shot) in the afternoon round, both on the Upper Course. Play on the second day moves to the Lower Course where the team’s aggregate score is the format for one round. The overall format is unique and greatly appreciated by the field because it requires that both team members play to a very high caliber. The winners receive traditional gold medals and their names are inscribed on the A.W. Tillinghast Trophy, which sits on display at the Club year-round.

The Baltusrol Invitational is now in its 28th year and has become a national and international event with teams coming from throughout the United States, Scotland, England, Canada and Bermuda. The field is made up mainly of mid- amateur-type competitors who, as two man teams, compete over 54 holes on both the Upper and Lower Courses. The event is traditionally held on the Wednesday and Thursday before Labor Day. The Wednesday format consists of better ball in the morning and foursomes (alternate shot) in the afternoon, both rounds played on the Upper. Play on Thursday moves to the Lower where the team's aggregate score is the format for the day. The overall format is unique and greatly appreciated by the field. Indeed, it requires that both team members play to a very high caliber. The winners receive traditional gold medals and their names are inscribed on the A.W. Tillinghast Trophy, which sits on display in the Grill Room throughout the year.

The list of contestants and winners reads like a Who' s Who of amateur golf: David Eger, Randy Sonnier, Duke Delcher, Bob Housen, Raymond Floyd Jr. and Matt Kuchar. Twice Baltusrol teams have won the Invitational. Rick Shea and John Lewis won in 1988; Steven Boyd and Roger Hoit in 1996. The Baltusrol Invitational has earned a distinguished place in amateur golf. In our experience, some of the very best mid- amateur players have made it a point to obtain an invitation and compete. In 2000, some 16 contestants from the Invitational field qualified to play in the U.S. Amateur.
