Texas South Amateur: Booker takes lead

Mike Booker sits at 7-under-par with two stroke lead. First round leader Brandon Wilhide is three back

MISSOURI CITY, Texas (Aug. 6, 2011) -– Clear skies and the Texas heat joined the field during the second round of the South Amateur Championship hosted by Quail Valley Golf Course. Scoring conditions were out there even with the heat as 14 players were able to card second round scores of even-par or better. Mike Booker took advantage of “moving day” to enter the final round atop the leaderboard. Booker, of the The Woodlands, was able to put together another fantastic round to follow his opening round 3-under par 68 with a 4-under par 67 second round. The 2004 South Amateur champion opened with an even-par 35 front side, and found his scoring rhythm on the back side. An eagle on the par five 10th hole jump started his final nine holes for the round, and for good measure he carded two more birdies en route to his 4-under par day. Booker goes into the final round at 7-under par 68-67—135. Kingwood’s Jeff Bellnap showed that red numbers are not just fluke occurrences on the newly redesigned El Dorado course with his second round score of 2-under par 69. Bellnap was able to record two birdies and a bogey for each nine during his second round. Bellnap sits two off of Booker’s pace at 5-under par 68-69—137 heading into Sunday’s final round. First round leader and current Houston Baptist University golfer, Brandon Wilhide, sits three shots back of Booker after a second round score of even-par 71. The Richmond product carded four birdies to go along with four bogeys during his round. Wilhide enters the final round at 4-under par 67-71—138. Joseph Reynolds, of Houston, registered four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey to card an even-par 71 in his second round. Reynolds is alone in 4th place heading into the final round after his opening two-day score of 68-71—139. Three players sit at 1-under par 141 going into the final round – Blake Wilson, of Katy, League City’s Preston Stanley and Juan Jose Salcedo of The Woodlands.
