Foreign flavor to the field for 111th playing of the U.S. Amateur

FAR HILLS, New Jersey (Aug. 1, 2011) -- Qualifying for the 2011 U.S. Amateur to be hosted by Erin Hills, in Erin, Wisconsin has begun. The 111th playing of the match play event will take place August 22-28. There are 97 qualifying sites throughout the country to determine the field of 312 players that make it to the championship. All sectional qualifying sites will have 36 holes of qualifying to determine who gets those few precious spots. Some sites will have to have an 18 hole cut because of the high numbers of players trying to qualify. Those who make it to the championship will endure another two days of qualifying at two sites, Erin Hills and Blue Mound Country Club, in order to cut the field down to the 64 players who will make match play. At the Chino Hills, CA site James Back of Cerritos, CA was medalist with 142. David Kim of Redondo Beach, CA was second with 143 and Arnold Yoon of Buena Park, CA made it with 144 In Texas at the Woodlands Country Club, local Juan Salcedo of the Woodlands shot 137 and took medalist honors. David Lee of Houston, TX, Herbert Day of El Salvador and Sean Einhaus of Germany also qualified. At another California site, Glendora Country Club, the qualifiers were Kevin Dougherty of Murrieta CA, with a 138, Riverside's Kevin Fitzgerald with a 139 and William Coe of San Diego with a 140. In Carrollton, Texas At the Honors Golf Club of Dallas Australian Daniel Nisbet was medalist with an astounding 133. Kolton Crawford of Mansfield Texas had a 137 and Marc Sambol - of Dallas was at 142. Qualifying will continue until August 10 when the final field will be determined. The qualifiers will join the many exempt players such as defending champion Peter Uihlein, the world's number one ranked amateur who recently won the Northeast Amateur. Among the elite players will be Patrick Cantlay, #2 in the U.S., the recent winner of the Southern California Amateur and also Harris English who won the Southern Amateur and a Nationwide Tour event a few weeks ago.
