POWELL BUTTE, Ore. (May 16, 2013) -- The day started with 32 players in the championship flight and by sunset there were but 8 remaining. Getting to know the Quarterfinalists:
#1 SeedDarren KuhnPocatello, Idaho
Kuhn had a difficult match this morning when he faced the 2012 Medalist, Curtis Rystadt of Portland, Ore. who advanced in a playoff for the final spot in match play. Kuhn got off to a solid start winning holes 1 and 3 and wouldn’t lose a hole until 8 but would still turn at 2up after winning the difficult ninth hole. Rystadt battled back and squared the match after winning holes 14 and 16. On the par-5 finishing hole, Kuhn made birdie to advance with a hard-fought 1-up victory.
In the afternoon Kuhn faced local star, Jeff Ward of Bend, Ore. Kuhn again got off to a great start by winning holes 1, 2, 6 and 10 to take a 4-up advantage. Ward would go on to win hole 11 but Kuhn answered back by winning holes 13 and 14 to cap a 5#4 victory.
#24 SeedTom CarlsenBend, Oregon
Carlsen is another local player who has lots of experience at Brasada Ranch. It took Carlsen just 28 holes today to win both his matches and he didn’t see any holes past 14. In the morning match against Terry Paresi of Oregon City, Ore., Carlsen won holes 3, 5 and 6 and wouldn’t look back as he continued to roll around Brasada adding wins at 9, 11 and 14 as well en route to a 5&4 win.
In the afternoon Carlsen defeated Charles Griswold also of Bend, Ore. 5&4.
#4 SeedSteve RudeGraham, Washington
Rude won his opening match against Gary Goodison of Roberts Creek, B.C. 4&2.
In the afternoon, Rude had a convincing 5&4 victory against his friend Kent Brown of Colville, Wash.
#5 SeedBill WinterBeaverton, Oregon
Winter easily advanced this morning with a 6&4 victory over Mark Matthews of Albany, Ore.
In the afternoon, Winter beat Gay Davis of Portland, Ore. 4&2.

Hanson beat Ryan Mulhern of Vancouver, B.C. 5&3.
In the afternoon, Hanson snuck past Steve Savage of Surrey, B.C. 2&1

Gallacher advanced past Tim O’Neal of Vancouver, Wash. this morning in 19 holes.
