BANDON, Ore. (March 10, 2013) -- To say Colorado’s victory Sunday at the Bandon Dunes Championship was a surprise would be a bit of an understatement.
The Colorado men entered the March 8-10 tournament in Bandon, Ore., at No. 73 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings and had opened the fall with a combined 1-28 record against Division I teams in tough fields at the Amer Ari Invitational and The Prestige at PGA West, where the Buffaloes finished 17th and 15th, respectively.
But Colorado turned its poor spring start around at Bandon Dunes’ Old Macdonald Course, defeating a field that included two top-15 teams in No. 4 Washington and No. 14 SMU. The Buffaloes, the only team to finish under par (2-under 862), won by five shots over No. 82 Fresno State and by 11 over Washington.
Three Colorado players finished in the top 10, led by Jason Burstyn, who tied for third at 2-under 214. He was joined by David Oraee (T-6) and Philip Juel-Berg (T-9).
Fresno State’s Troix Tonkham won medalist honors at 6-under 210, three shots ahead of teammate Rufie Fessler.
