Fla. Winter Series: Jerry Rose wins season's 1st title

Jerry Rose earned first place honors at the Winter Series event conducted at West Orange Country Club
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. (Jan. 9, 2013) -- In the first event conducted in the FSGA’s 100th season, Jerry Rose earned first place honors at the Winter Series event conducted at West Orange Country Club in Winter Garden, January 7-8. He was joined in the winner’s circle by Dennis Brady and Fred Peel, who won the Senior and Super Senior divisions respectively.
Jerry Rose, of Sarasota, overcame a three stroke deficit in the Regular Division to prevail by one stroke. Rose posted a three-over par round of 74 in the first round, to trail Mike Damron, of Zephyrhills. Rose came out firing in the final round by posting a three-under par 68 to capture his first Winter Series event of the 2012-2013 season. First round leader, Mike Damron, finished alone in second place after rounds of 71-72. Paul Melson, of Plantation, took home third place honors with a tournament total of 148.
Dennis Brady, of Melbourne, captured the Senior Division crown with a tournament total of one-under par 141. After a first round of two-over par 73, Brady would trail John Vaccaro, of Sarasota, by four shots heading into the final round. Brady matched the low round of the tournament in the final round by carding a three-under par 68 to take home the title. John Vaccaro, finished in second place with a tournament total of four-over par 146. Tim Cox, of Palm Beach Gardens, earned third place honors with a tournament total of 149.
Fred Peel, of Chipley, went wire-to-wire to capture the Super Senior division title. Peel fired a first round of one-under par 70 to take a three stroke lead heading into the final round. In the final round Peel stumbled by making a triple bogey on the par three 7th hole to trail Jack Ramsey, of Germantown, by two strokes with four holes to play. Peel played steady on the final holes to hold on for a one stroke victory over Ramsey. Fred Allen, of North Venice, Randy Briggs, of Ocala, and Ray Darmstadt, of Cocoa Beach, tied for third place with a tournament total of 152.
The Winter Series events include seven competitions, six individual events and one four-ball event. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round.
