San Diego County Am: Four tied (73) for Round 1 lead
CARLSBAD, Calif (Jan. 4, 2013) -- Round one of the San Diego County Amateur got underway under crystal clear San Diego skies on Friday. Despite perfect playing conditions, only one red number appeared on the scoreboard, and that was in the Net Division, where Kurt Erikson of Carlsbad posted a 76 with a 6 handicap for a Net round of 70.
In the Championship Division, playing the Arnold Palmer layout from the 7007 yard "Palmer" tees, three players (Alex Franklin, Philip Chian, Joshua Shou, and Drew Trujillo) posted 1-over 73 while another four golfers are at 2-over 74. It should be an interesting finish in that division, and this writer predicts that someone is going to emerge from the pack with a round in the 60's to win it - armed with a little course knowledge and confidence.
In the Senior Division, Vic Calicchia of Carlsbad posted a solid 3-over 75 to take a two shot lead over Paul Hundhammer of San Diego and Pete Wlodkowski of Carlsbad into the final round.
Kurt Erikson (70) leads the Net by three strokes over amateurgolf.com Northern California Tour regular Korsen Yu, who made the trip down from Sunnyvale.
Michelle Piyapattra (78) leads the Women's Division. The final round is an 8:30am shotgun.
