Bearrie rallies to win Texas Mid-Am

2012 Mid-Am Champ John Bearrie
DALLAS, Texas (Sept. 23, 2012) -- For a third consecutive day, scoring conditions were nearly perfect at the Texas Mid-Amateur Championship presented by Breitling. The Blue Course at Dallas Athletic Club presented the state’s top mid-amateurs with a great test while two players battled down to the final hole. In the end, John Bearrie used a final round of 3 under par 69 to earn a come from behind victory.

John Bearrie entered the final round 3 shots off the lead, but quickly made up the deficit as he was 3 under par at the turn. Bearrie added birdies on holes 10 and 13 to jump into the lead for the first time. Bearrie made a bogey on the final hole to make things interesting, but held on for a one shot victory. John Bearrie has battled through the ups and downs of amateur golf for years, and now has a title that he has coveted for a long time.

Dallas Athletic Club member, Mike Schrade represented his club brilliantly all week, but eventually came up just short. Schrade entered the final round 2 shots off the lead and stayed near top of the leader board throughout Sunday. Schrade had an eventful start to his round with 3 birdies and 3 bogeys through his first 11 holes. He then made a birdie on the 15th hole to pull within one shot of the lead heading down the stretch. On the final hole, Schrade hit his approach to 6 feet for a chance to force a playoff. Mike Schrade tried to fight off his nerves, but his putt slid just past the hole and he finished alone is second place.

Joe Bendetti fired the low round of the day with a 4 under par 68. Bendetti made 5 birdies and just a single bogey to vault into a tie for third place with overnight leader Evan Nash, and Jordan Woolf. Players once again took advantage of the great conditions, as 18 under par rounds were posted on Sunday.
