Marty West won his first Metropolitan Senior Amateur Championship at Woodmont Country Club's North Course
ROCKVILLE, Maryland (Sept. 20, 2012) -- Marty West won his first Metropolitan Senior Amateur Championship at Woodmont Country Club's North Course with a second round even-par 72 leaving him one stroke ahead of Mike Occi after the two rounds of the championship. West (Columbia) recorded 72-72--144 while Occi (Cattail Creek) finished 72-73--145 as first round leader Stan Williams (River Creek) took third with 71-76-147.
West and Occi caught Williams at the turn and then the two had an up-and-down battle to the last putt on the 18th green. Occi took the lead with a birdie on #10 but West got even with a birdie on #12. Occi birdied #14 but West birdied #15 to Occi's bogey for the critical turn of events. Occi got back even with a birdie on #17 but missed an 8-foot par putt on the 18th green to fall one shot short.
Tied for fourth were Michael Kelly (Lake Presidential) with 78-73--151 and former champion Ben Clements (Hobbit's Glen) with 75-76--151. Solo sixth was George Mavrikes (Congressional) with rounds of 74 and 78 for 152. In a logjam at 153 were Don Ragley (River Creek: 79-73), Ron Bubes (Woodmont: 80-73--153) and Middle Atlantic Senior Amateur champion Bobby Morris (Congressional: 77-76--153).
West won the 2012 Maryland Senior Amateur in Spetember at Piney Branch for his second MSGA senior title while also winning two Middle Atlantic Seniors. This is not to mention his nine Maryland Amateur, five Middle Atlantic Amateur, two DC Amateur and three Maryland Open wins as well as almost 40 USGA championship appearances.
