Lynn Kuehn of Lacombe, Alta., Helene Chartrand of Pincourt, Que., and Mary Ann Hayward of Aurora, Ont. are tied for the lead
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (Aug. 23, 2012) -- Lynn Kuehn of Lacombe, Alta., Helene Chartrand of Pincourt, Que., and Mary Ann Hayward of Aurora, Ont. are tied for the lead of the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship after the second round of competition at Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
First round leader Kuehn shot a 7-over par 81 on the day for a two-day score of 3-over par 151, while Chartrand carded a 1-over par 75 in the second round thanks to an eagle on Hole No. 15 and two birdies. Defending champion Hayward also sits in first place after a 3-over par 77 today with six bogeys and three birdies.
“I hit my driver very poorly, so I had a lot of errors off the tee shots¿You just can’t afford to lose strokes off the tee here,” said Hayward. “I started making birdies today which is good, but just too many bogeys.”
”My round wasn’t as stellar as it was yesterday,” said Kuehn, who scored a personal best competitive score of 70 on the first day of competition. “I had a triple on one of the holes and my putter wasn’t as hot, but I hit a lot of fairways.”
Mary Kay Thanos-Zordani of Chicago currently sits alone in fourth place with a two-day score of 4-over par 152.
After today’s round, the field was cut to low 70 and ties. Exactly 70 players will move onto the final round of competition tomorrow.
The Inter-Provincial Team Championship concluded today, with defending champions Team Ontario coming out on top with an overall score of 8-over par 304. Team British Columbia finished in second place three shots behind the winning team at 11-over par 307. Team Ontario is made up of Hayward, Gail Pimm of Uxbridge, and Ivy Steinberg of Stouffville. Team British Columbia is represented by Alison Murdoch of Victoria, Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna, and Penny Baziuk of North Saanich.
While her provincial team may have come in second, Palahniuk came out on top in the Super Senior division (60+ years), which also concluded today. Palahniuk scored a 7-over par 155, while her teammate Murdoch finished in the runner-up spot at 9-over par 157. Diane Williams of Calgary finished in third place at 11-over par 159.
Despite her win, Palahniuk said she struggled with her game today, with three birdies and six bogeys bookended by double bogeys on the first and last hole.
“I didn’t play very well today. I got off to a bad start so I was 3-over after the first two holes, I held it together not too bad, but then I double bogeyed the last hole so a bad start and a bad finish,” said Palahniuk. She currently sits in eighth position in the individual competition going into the final day.
The individual winner of the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship will receive an exemption into the 2012 USGA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, which will take place in Hershey, Penn. from September 8-13.
The final round of the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship tees off on Thursday, August 23rd at 7:30am ADT.
