Former USF golfer Conor McElyea wins the title he's waited eight years to get

SANTA CRUZ -- Conor McElyea, a former University of San Francisco golfer, finally earned the title he's waited eight years to get. He is the Santa Cruz City Amateur champion.

The Harbor High alum closed with a 1-under-par 69 in the final round for a 140 total at DeLaveaga Golf Course, a venue he calls home.

McElyea pieced together a steady final round to finish atop the leaderboard for his first title in the eight years he's competed in the event. His younger brother, Cory, was awarded second after shooting a 142 total and finishing in a three-way tie for runner-up honors with former Aptos native Seb Crampton and Campbell's Ryan Sloane.

A back-nine tiebreaker was used to settle the deadlock. Sloane, who along with Crampton reached the U.S. Open Sectional qualifying this year, was awarded third place.

"It's a little surprising," Conor McElyea said of his long-awaited title. "I definitely made some long putts down the stretch. That's not how I pictured it coming down, but I'll take it. I always thought it would be me making a 15- foot bender on the 18th hole."
