George Owens, John Casstevens and Tom Flory each shot opening round scores of 5-over 75 to lead the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 18th Virginia State Super Senior Amateur

HOT SPRINGS, Va. (July9, 2012) –– Division defending champion George Owens, 68, of Virginia Beach as well as central Virginian John Casstevens, 67, of Glen Allen and Tom Flory, 69, of Madison each shot opening round scores of 5-over 75 to lead the first round of stroke play qualifying in the 65-69 age division (6,172 yards) at the 18th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship being conducted at The Homestead’s Cascades Course. The first day featured a weather delay of nearly two hours in the early afternoon before play resumed just after 3 p.m. A contingent of four others in the 65-69 age category opened with 6-over 76 comprised of event rookies Bill Engel of Alexandria and Bobby Ukrop of Richmond as well as Jim Hudson, 66, of Midlothian and Richard Suggs, 69 of Palmyra. In the 70-74 age bracket (5,768 yards), Homestead member Jack Vardaman, 72, of Hot Springs, the 2008 VSGA Super Senior Amateur champion, bettered his age by two strokes, returning even-par 70. Even par through nine holes, Vardaman opened the inward half by making birdie at the par-4 10th hole and added another at No. 13. Despite a double-bogey at No. 15, the local returned the low round. Also in the division, David A. King, 70, of Potomac Falls had 71, while James Naylor, 74 of Lexington carded 72. Among the competitors in the 75 and over category, Ken Newlin, 76, of Nokesville led the way, shoot 2-over 72. Local Ned Baber, 75, of Roanoke returned 78. Four others had 79, including Bob Moyers, 76, of New Market, a six-time VSGA Senior Four-Ball champion. Following Wednesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, eight players will qualify for the match play field in both the 65-69 and 70-74 age divisions, while four players will make match play in the 75 and over division. Match play qualifiers in the 65-69 and 70-74 age groups will play two rounds of matches on Wednesday, July 11 and final round matches on Thursday, July 12. Golfers making match play in the 75 and over division will play one match on Wednesday and the final on Thursday. Players will only compete with those in their age group.
