Conn. State Am: Quarterfinals set

2011 runner-up Matt Smith cruised through both his Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches

ORANGE, Conn. (June 27, 2012) -- The terrible early week weather seemed like ancient history when thirty-two of the state’s top amateur golfers began their quest for victory in the 110th Connecticut Amateur Championship. After two rounds of match play the field has dwindled down to just eight. 2011 Connecticut Amateur runner-up Matt Smith from Quinnatissett Country Club cruised through both his Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches winning 5 & 3 and 4 &3 respectively. He is looking to become the first player to compete in back to back Connecticut Amateur finals since Will Strickler won consecutive Championships in 2007 and 2008. When Andy Mai from the eClub New Haven defeated medalist Brendan Lemp from Wampanaog Country Club in the opening round, the lowest remaining seed was Christopher Swift from Great River Golf Club. Swift will be paired against Geoff Vartelas from Lyman Orchards Golf Club in his Thursday morning quarterfinal match. Mai would be eventually be beaten by a birdie on the nineteenth hole by Branden Chicorka from eClub River Valley. Chicorka, who won the 2011 Russell C. Palmer Cup, is the only player remaining with a CSGA major championship to his record and will be looking to become only the second player to capture both the Connecticut Amateur and the Russell C. Palmer Cup. The other players to advance to the quarterfinals are; John Jackopsic-Gillette Ridge Golf Club, Ben Conroy-eClub River Valley, Patrick Ross-Rolling Hills Country Club and Michael Masso-Lake of Isles. Quarterfinal matches will begin tomorrow Thursday, June 28th at 8:00am with the two semi-final matches to follow.
