Mateer/Wlodkowski and Vallone/Wells set pace at 1-under-par, while defending champs Hogarth and Pate are 1 back at 72.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, March 21 - Pete Wlodkowski of Carlsbad and Pat Mateer of Mission Viejo and Jim Vallone of San Dimas and Donald Wells of Glendora each fired rounds of 1-under-par 71 today at Red Hill Country Club, good for a one-shot lead after the first round of the 3rd Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Foursomes Championship. Defending champions Tim Hogarth of Northridge and John Pate of Santa Barbara matched par with a 72 today and are lurking one shot behind the leaders in the difficult alternate-shot format. Three other groups posted scores of 1-over-par 73 and are two shots back of the leaders. The final round is tomorrow, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. Wlodkowski and Mateer began with birdies on their first two holes (Nos. 8 and 9 in the shotgun start) and finished with three birdies and back-to-back bogies on the par-four 13th and par-five 14th holes. Valone and Wells also had three birdies two bogies. Hogarth and Pate got off to a rocky start, making a triple-bogey 6 on the par-3 seventh hole (their second) and then bogeying the par-5 seventh, but rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8 and 9. They posted three birdies and one bogey on the back nine. 3rd SCGA Foursomes Championship at Red Hill Country Club; Rancho Cucamonga, CA 6,611 yards; par 72 18-hole results: 71 - Jim Vallone, San Dimas-Donald Wells, Glendora; Pete Wlodkowski, Carlsbad-Pat Mateer, Mission Viejo. 72 - John Pate, Santa Barbara-Tim Hogarth, Northridge. 73 - Patrick Carrigan, Walnut-Keith Kinsel, Glendale; Chris Rouk, Irvine-Dennis Reiland, Irvine; Robert Osborn, Glendora-Jim Osborn, Hacienda Heights. 74 - Mark Rossi, La Verne-Dan Sullivan, Pasadena. 75 - James Myers, Oceanside-Brett Atkinson, Carlsbad; James Popoff, La Habra Heights-Iain MacDonald, Fullerton; Mark Etue, Carlsbad-Donald O'Connor, Carlsbad; Craig Steinberg, Oak Park-Michael Turner, Sherman Oaks; Mark Gardner, Redlands-Ted Lyford, Redlands; Steve Pircher, Manhattan Beach-Robert Forster, Huntington Beach; Scott Crawshaw, Pasadena-Jeffrey Payne, Garden Grove; Michael Donovan, Fullerton-Randal Cross, Bakersfield; David Ujihara, Brea-Gary Wing, Irvine. 76 - Greg Grohs, Arcadia-Mike Harris, Encinitas; Rob Kring, Murrieta-Michael McCrary, San Marino; Jeff Johnston, Calabasas-Greg Merfeld, Agoura Hills; Keith Gulla, San Bernardino-Stan Ware, Victorville; Brian Lindley, Corona del Mar-Robert Summers, Trabuco Canyon. 77 - Bob Erling, Murrieta-Peter Lane, Riverside; Jim Ream Jr, Cerritos-Mike Blum, Seal Beach; Thomas McGreevy, Huntington Beach-William Coleman, Huntington Beach; John Mack, Alta Loma-Gary Havro, Claremont; Jonathan Petke, Rancho Santa Margarita-Jon Petke, Mission Viejo. 78 - Mel Collins, Long Beach-Gregory Hetzer, San Pedro; Jack Rector, Thousand Oaks-Mark Monreal, Moorpark; Marty Temple, Anaheim-Mike Miyasaki, La Habra; John Adams, San Clemente-Jerry Maras, Westminster; Alan Braden, Escondido-Mark Schlosser, Vista; Joel Fieri, San Diego-Kent Taylor, Ramona. 79 - Jason Bittick, Coto de Caza-Steve DeLine, Yorba Linda; Jim Lovell, Yorba Linda-Wesley Tamashiro, Yorba Linda; David Oas, Encinitas-Fred Lynn, Carlsbad; Tom Norys, Riverside-Todd Stires, Murrieta; J.P.
