U.S. Open Sectionals: Complete roundup

Some of the top names in amateur golf took one last shot at the 2012 U.S. Open at one of 11 sites across the U.S.

Golfers vying for the ultimate start of the golf season took to courses across the country Monday with one thing on their mind: qualify. U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying took place at 11 sites in the U.S. to be exact with many of the biggest names in amateur golf taking dead aim at the 2012 U.S. Open to be held June 14- 17 at The Olympic Club.

Here is a look at the news from each sectional qualifying site:

Amateur Cameron Wilson of Rowayton, Conn. took home medalist honors, blowing away the field at the Canoe Brook Country Club U.S. Open Sectional in Summit, N.J.

The Stanford sophomore was 1-under after shooting a first-round 71 at the South Course but finished with 7-under 65 to take the top position and secure his tee time at Olympia.

Fellow amateurs Matthew Lowe (72-70--142, T-13), Ryan Harris (72-70--142, T-13) and Jim Liu (71-71--142, T-13) fared well but missed the cut.

Fresh off a pair of week-long efforts at the NCAA Championships, Jordan Spieth and Cory Whitsett narrowly missed an opportunity to clinch a qualifying berth for the 2012 U.S. Open.

Spieth's Texas Longhorns bested Whitsett and his teammates from Alabama in Sunday's NCAA Championship finale but both players ended up on the wrong side of the cut Monday. Spieth (70-70--140) and Whitsett (69-71--140) were tied for fourth, but fell in a four-person playoff to Brian Rowell and Alistair Presnell. They'll serve as the two alternates for the 2012 championship.

Dylan Frittelli, who drained the title-clinching putt for Texas, also put in a solid effort at the Houston Sectional. He fired a first-round 73 and followed up with a 69 in the second round, finishing in a ninth-place tie

Brooks Koepka captured the last of three qualifying spots at the U.S. Open Sectional held at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla. The Florida State Seminole shot a first-round 72 and followed up with a a 70 in the second round. He finally prevailed in a playoff over fellow amateur, Andy Zhang from China.

Sam Ryder, Daniel berger and J.D. Tomlinson all narrowly missed the cut. Auburn star Blayne Barber also missed out, finishing eight shots off the pace in a tie for 13th.

17-year old Beau Hossler, Mission Viejo, Calif., fired a 67 at Harding Park and 70 at Lake Merced to qualify for his second U.S. Open in two years. Amateur Alberto Sanchez of Nogales, Ariz. qualified on the number with rounds of 67 (HP), 71 (LM) for a 138 total. James Hahn, San Bruno, Calif. was medalist with rounds of 66 (LM) and 70 (HP) for a 136 total. PGA Tour winner and former amateurgolf.com member, Matt Bettencourt also qualified with rounds of 67 (HP), 71 (LM) 138 total

San Diego's Alex Ching narrowly missed the cut, finishing one shot off the pace while Stanford star and No. 2 player in the world Patrick Rodgers shot 71-72--143, tying for 14th place. Cal's Max Homa also finished tied for 14th.

UCLA's Anton Arboleda, who led the NCAA Individual Championship after one round this past week, finished tied for 54th.

Thomas Pieters, fresh off his NCAA Individual Championship at Riviera, couldn't find the magic needed to keep his amazing streak going. The Fighting Illini golfer finished five shots back and failed to secure one of two qualifying spots at the Glen Ellyn Sectional. The Belgium native shot a 3-under 69 in the first round and followed with a solid 2-under 70 but couldn't keep up with the low totals at the top of the leaderboard, including Tim Herron of the PGA Tour, who was at 10-under after the two qualifying rounds.

James White of Acworth, Georgia finished four shots outside of a qualifying spot at The River Club sectional. His 70-71--141 put him in fifth place and he'll serve as the second alternate.

Fellow amateur Justin Cho of Alpharetta was six shots outside of the cut. Michael Hebert of Atalnta, Anders Albertson of Woodstock, Georgia and Richy Werenski of South Hadley, Mass. by way of Georgia Tech, were among the other amateurs who missed out on three U.S. Open slots.

Nathan Smith, the career amateur from Pittsburgh prevailed as the low amateur in a star-studded sectional event in Columbus, Ohio but his score of 76-72--148 was only good enough for a tie for 63rd place.

In an event that included some of the PGA's top talent --- young and old --- Corbin Mills, who recently was one of six amateurs in the Masters, shout 73-75--148. Justin Thomas, who helped lead Alabama to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championship this past weekend mustered only a first-round 74 and second-round 76, finishing well off the pace.

Amateurs Joe Kastalec (69-68--137, T-4) of Cincinnati and Ontario native Garrett Rank (69- 69--138, T-6) narrowly missed an opportunity to secure one of two U.S. Open slots at the Springfield Country Club U.S. Open Sectional.

Brice Garnett (66-65--131) and John Peterson (64-68--132), the 2011 NCAA Individual Champion, were the two qualifiers.

Other amateurs whose 2012 U.S. Open dreams stalled in Springfield included Dalton Melnyk (72-69--141, T-12), Jeff Scohy (70-71--141, T-12) and Jacob McBride (67-75--142, T-15).

There were seven slots available but amateurs came up empty at the Rockville, Maryland sectional.

Tyler Dunlap of Westlake, Texas was the low amateur, finishing two shots outside of the cut following a 72-73--145 effort. Maclain Huge of Lovettsvile, Virg. shot a 1-under 71 in the second round but it wasn't enough as he finished four shots behind the final spot.

The U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier at Germantown CC in Memphis, Tenn. was suspended due to weather. Qualifying was completed on Tuesday.

Amateur Bobby Wyatt of Mobile, Ala. was part of a playoff after going 70-66, but bowed out on the 18th hole (the third playoff hole.) Wyatt will be the second alternate.

Another amateur, University of Alabama standout Hunter Hamrick, will make his professional debut at the U.S. Open after finishing at 8-under 134 (67-67).

Amateur Nick Sherwood, who plays for Oregon State, made his way to the Open by winning a playoff against fellow amateur Daniel Miernicki of Santee, Calif, who plays at the University of Oregon. Both shot 3-under-par 138 to tie for the second spot at the Creswell site and had to complete the playoff on Tuesday morning.

About the U.S. Open Final Qualifying

Final qualifying for the U.S. Open Championship. Played at various sites across the U.S. on the Monday a week and half before the U.S. Open. There is also a qualifier in Japan and in England. 36 holes of stroke play at each site.
