Ray Emsley defeated Mike Fedewa 4 & 3. John Lindholm beat Tim Redmond 2 &1 to take the super senior division
GROSSE ILE, Michigan (June 1, 2012) -– Ray Emsley (Davisberg) defeated Mike Fedewa (Canton) 4&3 to win the GAM Senior Match Play Championship at Grosse Ile Country Club.
“We got soaked!” said Emsley. “I’m not at my best in the rain and we just persevered.”
Emsley said he got lucky on a couple of putts that helped him win the championship. He two-putted a difficult 40-foot putt early in the match and then had another great putt after a two-hour rain delay.
“We had a really long rain delay and we hit our shots onto the seventh green and left our marks,” said Emsley. “When we came back I had a very long, difficult putt and I had no expectations of being able to two-putt it and I knocked it within a couple of inches which was huge. I was elated because I was expecting a three-putt.”
Emsley says he is not a great player in the rain and did not have anything in particular working well during his round. He chalked his victory up, in part, to Fedewa being a bit off his game.
“He just didn’t have his A game today and I think it worked out for my benefit,” said Emsley. “I think it was more him not having his A game than anything. He played well below his average. I’ve played with him a number of times and he is really a great player.”
In the Super Senior division, John Lindholm (Grand Blanc) defeated Tim Redmond (Dexter) 2&1.
“I played better in the pouring rain and when it stopped, Tim started playing better,” said Lindholm. “At my age, you try not to play in this kind of weather.”
