Luke Bakke of Little Rock, Arkansas fires a tournament-low round of 4-under-par 68 to win the overall title by 4, while Jim Myers stays steady in claiming the Senior title and Peter Hlavin wins the small net division
But miss a green in the wrong place, and these slick, sloping surfaces demand a deft touch and a variety of shots. Take Joe Johnson for instance. In Monday's first round, Johnson, a member of the Golf Club of California, found the greenside bunker with his approach to the short par-4 12th. From there, he hit what looked like a safe bunker shot. But with a water hazard just inches from the putting surface, Johnson's ball trickled in a-la TPC at Sawgrass, number 17. "I've hit that shot before," bemoaned Johnson, who came back after a first-round 79 with a 70 on Tuesday to tie for 4th at 149.
Most of the 5-handicap and under field had trouble breaking 80 in the first round, but none complained about the fairness or conditioning of this wonderful new country club. Many of them lost strokes on the water guarded par-3 18th, where not only does the player have to negotiate the nerve-wracking 200 yard carry, they then have to master a firm, sloping green.
Luke Bakke, a former Arkansas Amateur Champion now living in Del Mar, headed to the 18th tee on Tuesday in the second-to-last group at 5-under-par on the day, and tournament. His final round outfit could be easily spotted from the clubhouse 300 yards away -- lime green pants, bright yellow shirt and matching John Deere cap that only a guy with six birdies and one bogey on the day could get away with.
Bakke's tee shot found the surface, but three putts later he wondered if his 140 total was going to be enough to hold off his friend Patrick Stolpe, playing in the final pairing behind him.
"I knew Stolpe was capable of posting a low number, and I fully expected it from him on Tuesday," explained Bakke. "I thought that three-putt might make a difference."
As it turned out, Bakke had room to spare as Stolpe shot 74 for a 1-over-par total of 145. In all, only 6 rounds under par were posted over the two rounds, and this at a course that measures a relatively 'short' 6850 yards.
In the Senior Division, Jim Myers of Oceanside held on to win by four strokes although on a couple of holes a balky putter gave his competitors brief hope of making up some of the five shot lead Myers took into the final round after a solid 73 on Monday. His total of 73-75=148 was good for a 4-stroke victory over Eugene Medlock of Westlake Village and Lloyd Sappington of Rancho Santa Fe. The Net Division was small, but spirited, with Peter Hlavin of Trabuco Canyon winning by 4 over Scott Henrikson of Carlsbad. Hlavin kept pretty close to his handicap, shooting a 2-over-par net total of 146.
Tournament Notes:
- In Tuesday's final round, Andrew Bostrom of Del Mar aced the par-3 seventh hole with a 7-iron. It was Bostrom's second career hole-in-one; he made his first earlier this year
- Jonathan Dudley, a friend of Bostrom's who grew up in Vermont, holed out a wedge from 120 yards for an eagle three at the par-5 fourteenth. Dudley passed many players on the leaderboard on Tuesday, as he shot 2-under-par 70, the second lowest 18 hole score at the challenging Golf Club of California layout
- Special thanks to GC of California General Manager Scott Bentley, Head Professional Ken Foster, and Tournament Coordinator Denny Dalton, and the entire staff of the Golf Club of California for providing a warm welcome for our first major event in the San Diego region. We hope to make it an annual affair!
