After trailing by a point heading into Sunday, the Carolinas team dominated the competition's final round singles matches in the regular division and delivered a seven-point victory (27½-20½)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (October 23, 2005)–– The 24-golfer Virginias team scored eight points in singles matches on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough as Carolinas dominated the competition in the regular division and delivered a seven-point victory (27½-20½) as the 60th Virginias-Carolinas Team Matches concluded today at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. Virginias, which held a 12½-11½ lead entering final day action, were outscored 12½-3½ in regulars singles’ action. Even though Virginias won the seniors’ matches, 4½-3½, Carolinas’ regulars made the difference on their way to registering a decisive 16-8 final day victory. The loss snapped Virginias’ three-match win streak dating back to 2002. A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side. On the seniors’ side, reigning VSGA Senior Amateur champion Jamie Gough (Fairfax, Va.) and Senior Am runner-up Tom Grady (Marshall, Va.) each scored victories for Virginias. Gough defeated Bob Stringer (Blythewood, S.C.), 5 and 4, while Grady bested Ernie Newton (High Point, N.C.), 1 up. In addition, Suffolk’s J.P. Leigh recorded a full point with a 5 and 4 win against Jim Barnette (Anderson, S.C.). Jack Forbes (Morgantown, W.Va.) defeated Tommy Ford (Charleston, S.C.), 1 up for one of the team’s four victories in seniors’ competition. Also for Virginias, Richmond’s Vinny Giles scored one-half point. Larry Boswell (Jamestown, N.C.), Bob Kulp (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and David Strawn (Charlotte, N.C.) notched victories for Carolinas in seniors’ action. Among the regulars, Virginias won two matches and halved three more, but dropped a trio of 1-up decisions and lost another match, 2 and 1. Richmond’s Allan Strange (pictured right) and West Point’s Paul C. Erdman accounted for Virginias’ only victories in regular competition. Strange beat Skip Taylor (Flat Rock, N.C.), 6 and 5, while Erdman bested Barry Fabyan (Charlotte, N.C.), 3 and 2. Drew Whitten (Hurricane, W.Va.), Allen Barber (Yorktown, Va.) and Craig Mason (Lorton, Va.) each contributed one-half point for Virginias. North Carolinians Wynn Solle (Pinehurst, N.C.), John Kelley (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Danny Gurley (Chapel Hill, N.C.) each notched 1-up wins, while Paul Simson (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded a 2 and 1 victory. Also posting wins in the first eight singles matches for Carolinas were Mike Goodes (Reidsville, N.C.), Steve Liebler (Columbia, S.C.) Sammy Truett (Surfside Beach, S.C.) and Bert Atkinson (Charleston, S.C.). In addition, Emmett Turner (Greenwood, S.C.), Dean Channell (Cary N.C.) and John Finster (Wake Forest, N.C.) recorded victories and were instrumental in Carolinas wiping out the deficit they faced to start the day. The event is one of the oldest team events in the country. The best 24 amateurs from North and South Carolina compete against their counterparts from Virginia and West Virginia. Sixteen regulars and eight seniors represent each team.
