BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 7, 2012) -- University of Alabama freshman Justin Thomas has been selected as the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month for April. Thomas defeated as stong field of top-ranked collegians to win invidivual honors at the Southeastern Conference Championship at Sea Island, Ga.

Thomas won the SEC title by two shots over heralded teammate Bobby Wyatt with a 7-under-par 203 total. Leading his Crimson Tide squad to the team championship, this was the third individual title for Thomas this season.

Honorable mention went to decorated senior Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC, who shot a remarkable 10-under 62 on his own ball at the Governors Club in Chapel Hill, NC, in leading his team to the Carolinas Senior 4-Ball title for the third time. He and partner Don Detweiler, who added three birdies to Simson’s gem in the second round, combined for a 190 total to trim three strokes off the tournament record.

The SGA’s March-through-October award is in its 10th year. A blue-ribbon national panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists selects the winners. San Diego State’s J.J. Spaun won the award for March.

The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level, including staging of the storied Southern Amateur, which will be played for the 106th time in July at Chenal CC in Little Rock, Arkansas. The SGA Southern Junior is set for the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst in June.
