IRVING, TX (April 24, 2012) -- Steady winds from the south coupled with firm and fast greens challenged the players to make a final round charge in the North Senior Amateur being held at Hackberry Creek Country Club. In the championship division, six players found themselves within four shots of the first round leader, John Grace, heading into today’s final round. In the super senior division there were five players within seven shots of James Burdine who posted an opening round of one over par, 73.

Defending a title is always fulfilling for a player and John Grace conquered this after his two day performance which saw him post a three under par, two day total, of 141. His final round two under par, 70, cemented his repeat victory of the North Senior Amateur title. Grace’s scorecard in the final round was a sign of consistency from start to finish. Sixteen pars coupled with two birdies, which came on the front nine par fives, solidified his five shot win. In second place was Phil Austin (Arlington) who capitalized on the par fives today playing them in three under par on his way to a closing round of one under par, 71. Rounding out the top three was Lee Sandlin (Dallas). Sandlin closed his tournament with an even par round of 72 giving him a two day total of 147.

James Burdine (Dallas) held onto his first round lead in the super senior division with a round of 78 for a two day total of 151. Struggling early, Burdine battled back to birdie his final three holes of the day to solidify a victory over Harold Speer (Mansfiled). Speer made a charge today firing a final round of two over par 74 which included an eagle, four birdies, six bogeys and a double. Speer’s two day total of 154, came just three shots shy of Burdine. Ted Samples rounded out the top three with a two day total of 159.

The format for the championship is 36 holes of stroke play consisting of two divisions: Senior (55 or older as of the tournament start date) and Super Senior (65 or older as of the tournament start date). Each division will play from a different set of tees/yardages with a separate champion being crowned in each division.
