LIBERTYVILLE, IL (October 6, 2005) -- Mother Nature greeted the 2005 Merit Amateur
field with a warm and windy 80 degree day for the first 27 holes, but she had
other plans for the final 27. 2003 Merit Am champions Chris Beto and Jamie Hogan
took advantage of the mild conditions and jumped out to an early lead grabbing
+18 points in the best ball format. Ken Vanko/Bob Christensen and Dana Kiley/Derek
Kiley netted +16 and +12 respectively to remain close to the leaders before heading
into day two's team aggregate format.
With temperatures in the low 50's, winds gusting to 40 mph, and greens running
12 on the stimpmeter, the second day proved to be a true test of golf. Tom Beach/Erik
Nielsen from Tuscon, AZ battled the severe conditions to finish at -16 for the
day and moving them up 3 spots in the field to finish 5th.
Vanko/Christensen tried to catch the day one leaders with their -10 point finish,
but it was the stellar play of Hogan/Beto, who shot 72 and 74 for the first
18 holes and a pair of 37's on the final 9, to net 0 points for the day and
capture their second Merit Am title.
