Longhorns Lead at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate
Austin, Texas (March 16, 2012) -- The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team notched three one-under rounds to finish the first round of the 46th annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club in first place.
The Longhorns (281) closed out the first round in first place, three strokes under par. No. 42 TCU (284), No. 19 New Mexico (285), No. 36 North Texas (287), and No. 39 Texas Tech (289) round out the top-five, respectively.
Top-ranked freshman Jordan Spieth (70), second-ranked senior Dylan Frittelli (70), and 24th-ranked junior Julio Vegas (70) all finished the first round tied for sixth place at one-under.
Texas A&M's Geoff Shaw (65) holds the individual lead at six-under. TCU's Johan de Beer, New Mexico's James Erkenbeck, and North Texas's Carlos Ortiz are all tied for second place, three strokes back.
Spieth had three birdies on the front-nine and added another on the 12th hole, finishing the first round hitting par-or-better on all but three holes. Frittelli hit a birdie on the ninth and 11th holes, prior to stringing together consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes. Vegas concluded a strong first round with five birdies, three of which occurred on the front-nine holes.
Sophomore Toni Hakula (71), ranked 43rd in the nation, birdied the 18th hole and finished the first round even at par. Hakula is tied for 12th place, along with teammates junior Cody Gribble (71), and seniors Alex Moon (71) and Adam Wennerstrom (71) - the latter three all competing as individuals. Wennerstrom began the back-nine with a dominating three-consecutive birdies before finishing out an even-par round.
In his fifth start as a Longhorn, freshman Kramer Hickok (74) hit two birdies, finishing out the first round four-over and tied for 35th place. Senior Brett Spencer (80), competing as the Longhorns fourth individual, had one birdie en route to his ten-over 67th place finish.
