St. Mary's golfer posts a final-round 67 (one shot off the course record) to win at StoneTree Golf Club

NOVATO, Calif. (Jan. 29, 2012) -- Mac McClung is no stranger to tournament golf. And he's no stranger to winning tournament golf. That experience paid off this weekend as he took home the 2012 amateurgolf.com Wine Country Cup at StoneTree Golf Club.

McClung, who hails from Fremont, followed up a first-round 72 with a 5-under 67 to win by five shots over a solid field.

McClung, who won last year's Firestone Invitational as a junior at St. Mary's, chipped in twice and was able to birdie two of the course's three par-5s.

"I felt comfortable the whole day with my short game," McClung told amateurgolf.com following his final round. "I never really got nervous."

McClung finished one shot off the course record of 66 held by former Stanford standout and 2011 PGA Tour player Zack Miller.

Eric Grimberg of Moraga finished alone in second place ahead of Grant Rappleye of Elk Grove and Jerry Ledzinski of Carmel.

Smith defeats Balatti in playoff to win Senior Division

In the senior division, Eric Smith of Tiburon won on the first playoff hole, defeating Santa Rosa's Paul Balatti.

With Smith failing to reach the green on the 368-yard par-4 in two shots, Balatti, who faced a 15-foot birdie putt, appeared to be in control. Smith, however, chipped in from 22 feet off the green and Balatti missed the putt that would have sent the playoff to an other hole.

Both players finished the two-day event at 6- over 150.

Foley outlasts Hogan to win Net Division

John Foley of Novato held on to win the net division thanks to a second-round 71. Foley, who shot even par 72 in the first round, was three shots better than Robbie Hogan (75-71- -146), also from Novato.
