Cullen and deWindt take Palm Beach Parent-Child Championship
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Oct, 23, 2011) – The
Martin County team of Cullen and Dana
deWindt are champions for the first time after
winning the 24th annual Honda Classic Parent-
Child golf tournament Sunday at Bear Lakes
Country Club.
The runners-up a year ago, heretofore their best finish in more than a decade of trying, the deWindts won by three strokes with a scramble score of 11 under par 61 on the Lakes course.
“We thought we won last year when we finished with 62 and beat the Lees by three strokes,” said Dana de Windt of Stuart, a retired Morgan Stanley executive. “Then Jason and Wayne Dollard came in late and beat us by two.”
Added Cullen, a tennis pro at Piper’s Landing in Palm City, “We made a lot of 10-15 foot putts for birdies and pars, and we only missed one green,” at the par-4 fourth hole, “and Dad made about a 20 footer for par. It kept the momentum going.” Overall, the deWindts birdied Nos. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 17 and 18.
Willie and Jesse Lee of Belle Glade and Wellington, respectively, have won the Parent-Child, previously known as the Father-Son, a record 12 times. They did not enter this year because of a schedule conflict. “I am so happy for Cullen and Dana,” said Wayne Dollard, a dentist from Reston, Va. “They have been trying to win this thing for so many years,”
The tournament conducted by the Palm Beach County Golf Association drew 37 teams, 10 with the son or daughter 12 years or younger. The winners of that division were Kristian and Ricky Fortis, West Palm Beach, low gross, 65, and Tyler and Carl Mistretta, North Palm Beach, low net, 63. Team Fortis was also overall low net at 60. Rounding out the top five gross scorers: 2, Joe and John Latowski, Stuart, 64; 3, Liam and Fred Fine, Jupiter, and Team Fortis, 65; 5, Jason and Wayne Dollard, Boca Raton, 66
