Eloise Carson and Tom Phillips earn Oregon Senior Amateur titles

WOODBURN, OR (September 16, 2005) -- Despite what appeared to be a relative cakewalk through the match play brackets, Tom Phillips of Seattle, Wash. (Sandpines GL), is a man who understands the probability of winning each match is very slim. Without regard to that probability, Phillips handily defeated medalist Bruce Bye of Aloha, Ore. (The Reserve) 7 & 6, almost a foregone conclusion once Bye injured his back on the third hole. "I caught a break," noted Phillips as he recounted his trek through match play. "I was not over par on any round I played this week, and it appeared that none of my opponents where playing up to their potential." Although he hails from Seattle, Phillips is hardly an unknown commodity among his golfing peers. He is best known for having once led Oregon Senior Open after shooting 61-65, only to be disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard after his final round. "I would have actually finished runner-up at that tournament to Chuck Milne," he commented. "No matter how far I might be up in a competition, I battle the fear of being run down from behind." In the Women's Division, medalist Eloise Carson of Portland, Ore. (Portland Golf Club) narrowly defeated 2001 Women's Senior Amateur champion Jan Young of Portland, Ore.
