Dylan Wu to meet Kevin Murphy in the finals
SUNRIVER, Ore. (Aug. 18, 2011) -- The 57th Pacific Northwest Junior Boys' Amateur Championship conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) continued today with quarterfinal and semifinal matches at Sunriver Resort - Meadows in Sunriver, Ore.
Dylan Wu the No. 5 seed from Medford, Ore. and Kevin Murphy of Rogue River, Ore. will face off in tomorrow's 36-hole final match. Wu beat 2010 runner-up Chris Babcock of Shoreline, Wash. in this morning's quarterfinal matches 3 and 1. In a very close match Wu won the 6th hole to go 1-up and then lost the 12th hole to go back to all square before winning holes 15, 16, and 17 to close out the match 3 and 1.
In his semifinal match this afternoon, Wu defeated Nigel Lett of Tigard, Ore. 3 and 2 to advance to tomorrow's final match. Wu never trailed in this match and took the early lead by winning holes 2, 3, 5, and 7 to hold a 3-up lead at the turn and wins on holes 11 and 13 would put him dormie with 5 holes to play. Nigel battled back by winning holes 14 and 15 but could not beat Wu on the par-3 16th hole, ending the match 3 and 2.
Kevin Murphy the No. 2 seed from Rogue River, Ore. advanced through the quarterfinals with a 3 and 2 victory over Raza Sulman of Eugene Oregon. With the match all square after 8 holes, Murphy caught fire and won the next four holes with birdies to go 4-up and he would easily hang on to win.
In Murphy's semifinal match against Andrew Whalen of Euphrata, Wash. things got a little interesting as the 3-up lead Murphy had built up through 15 holes disappeared after Whalen won holes 16, 17, and 18 to force extra holes. On the 19th hole Whalen found the bunker with his approach shot and Murphy stuffed it close to the hole for an easy birdie and the win.
Medalist Kelly Campbell of Auburn, Wash. was defeated by Nigel Let of Tigard, Ore. 2 and 1 in the quarterfinal matches.
Final matches will commence tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m.
