Grant Rappleye's pair of 69's good for a win at the Marin County Amateur at San Geronimo Golf Course
NOVATO, CALIF. (July 24, 2011) -- Despite some great rounds under par Sunday from Tyler Evans (71), Alex Franklin (71), Matt Seramin (69) & Matt Cohn (69) it was just too little, too late. Evans, Franklin, Seramin, & Cohn soon found out that their late push Sunday afternoon was not going to be enough once the final group came in. Grant Rappleye was the only player in the field to shoot two rounds under par... firing a 69 Sunday to match his 69 Saturday. Grant captured the 2011 Marin County Amateur Championship by 4 strokes over Brent Booth who fired a Sunday 74, totalling 142 (2-under par).
"I made sure I hit the exact same club on every hole today as I did yesterday," Rappleye said. "I didn't hit my driver well, but I hit my irons well enough to make sure I had only two putts (to make par) on almost every hole."San Geronimo Club Champion Anthony Vaccaro made a respectable showing, finishing T-8 at 148.
Sunday morning it appeared that no one in the Senior Championship wanted to take home the title. The final group of Kong, Guerin, and Wilmer posted front nines scores of 40, 43, and 44, respectively. Meanwhile defending Champion Mark Miller and competitor Peter Moren posted scores of 39 and 34, respectively. Miller capped off his round with a back nine 36 to shoot 75 and Moren also finished at 75 to put them both in a tie for second at 153. Ray Kong was able to hold it together with a 39 on the back nine to give him a Sunday total of 79. His tournament total was 152, giving him a one shot lead that he didn't realize he had until the scorecards were turned in.
