Jess Bonneau defeats Trevor Hyde 1-up to win his first Texas Mid-Am Match Play
HORSESHOE BAY, Tex. (July 24, 2011) -- The finals of the Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship presented by Liberty Mutual got underway this morning at the beautiful Fazio designed Escondido. Battling through a stroke play qualifying round and four match play competitors to get to the finals were Trevor Hyde of Kerrville and Jess Bonneau of Cypress. Bonneau, who shot 74 in his qualifying round, entered the championship finals as the 31st seed.
Trevor Hyde battled through the match play bracket as an 8 seed after carding an even par 71 in his qualifying round. Both men putted extremely well all week and looked to continue that in today’s final.
The match started off with both players trading pars through the first four holes. Hyde then took a 1-up lead on five when Bonneau missed the green and failed to get up and down. After another string of pars by both players, Bonneau capitalized on the par 5 ninth when he hit his approach shot to one foot bringing the match back to all square.
The match headed to the difficult par 3 tenth where Hyde regained his 1-up lead after Bonneau three putted. Hyde then found trouble on the par 5 eleventh and made a costly bogey, once again bringing the match back to all square. Bonneau then took his first lead of the match after draining a ten foot birdie putt on the twelfth to go 1-up.
After trading pars on the par four thirteenth and fourteenth, Hyde capitalized once again on a par three when Bonneau’s tee shot found the hazard left. Bonnea made a great up and downfor bogey, but it was too little too late as Hyde two putted for his par. Bonneau won the sixteenth hole with a par to take a one up lead and looked like he had victory in his hands after Hyde hit his tee shot into the hazard in front of the seventeenth green. Hyde then played a remarkable explosion shot from the water and made a twenty foot par putt to send the match to the eighteenth hole.
Nerves may have crept into the players’ minds as both players hit their tee shots into trouble on the final hole and were forced to lay-up. Both players were unable to hit the green in regulation, but Jess Bonneau was able to get up and down for par to force Hyde to hole his shot from off the green. Trevor Hyde hit a great putt from short of the green, but it just slid by the hole and gave Bonneau a 1-up victory. This is the first TGA championship victory for Jess Bonneau.
