Irwin and Marsico advance at Colorado Match Play

Steve Irwin and Jonathan Marsico, advance to the quarterfinals of the 111th CGA Match Play Championship with two wins at Bear Creek Golf Club

DENVER, CO (July 13, 2011) -- Several CGA champions, including Steve Irwin and Jonathan Marsico, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 111th CGA Match Play Championship with two wins on Wednesday at Bear Creek Golf Club in west Denver. Irwin, the 2004 Match Play champ, and Marsico, the 2008 Stroke Play winner, will square off in one of the quarterfinals on Thursday. Irwin, the top seed this week, scored two 2 and 1 victories on Wednesday. Marsico won 2 up and 3 and 1, with the latter coming over Andy Dannewitz, who made a hole-in-one in his Wednesday morning victory over eighth-seeded Cameron Brown. The other quarterfinalists are Derek Fribbs and John Ahern, who will be University of Colorado teammates beginning this fall, Colorado State University golfer Zahkai Brown, Colorado School of Mines’ Jim Knous, Michael Lee of Greeley Country Club and Spencer Sheets, who will play golf for Oral Roberts. Participants in the final four matches Wednesday had to wait out a weather delay before completing play shortly before sunset. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, with the 36-hole final set for Friday.
