The Yellow Jackets claimed their 13th overall ACC Men's Golf championship thanks in part to Paul Haley's individual title

NEW LONDON, NC (April 24, 2011) -- Georgia Tech captured their third straight and 13th overall title at the ACC Men’s Golf Championship, played April 22-24 at the Old North State Club (Par 72, 7,102 yards), in New London, N. C. The Yellow Jackets have won eleven outright and two co-champion titles in 2006 with North Carolina and Virginia Tech in 2007. The Yellow Jackets, who fired a 16-under 272 on Sunday, set a new low team record score of 831 (33 under par) to claim a 20-stroke win over the Duke Blue Devils who finished at 13-under par 851. The previous team record was in 2006 when North Carolina and Georgia Tech tied for the championship with a then team record of 833. Georgia Tech head coach Bruce Heppler said, “Obviously, it was a great day. The seniors played great and everybody played great. The seniors graduate in about 10 days and I’m so proud of them.” Clemson finished 10 strokes behind the Blue Devils at 3-under par 861. Virginia was fourth at even par 864. Florida State was fifth (866), NC State was sixth (872), Virginia Tech was seventh (874), North Carolina and Wake Forest were tied for eighth (879), Maryland was 10th (901) and Boston College was 11th (953). Georgia Tech’s Paul Haley (Sr., Dallas, Tex.) claimed the individual title in dramatic fashion with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole with a score of 10-under par 206. He shot a 2-under 70 in Sunday’s final round. Haley commented, “It feels really great to win here. It was a lot of fun coming down here and it’s my last time as a senior and I thought I played really well. (Being tied with teammate Kyle Scott)...”I was definitely nervous and standing on 17, I thought if I went 3-4 that would be good enough.” Georgia Tech teammate Kyle Scott (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa) finished one-stroke behind Haley at nine-under 207 after firing a 4-under 68 on the final day. Georgia Tech’s J. T. Griffin (Sr., Wilson, N.C.) and Duke’s Julian Suri (So., St. Augustine, Fla.) tied for third place at 7-under 209. Griffin fired a 6-under 66 on Sunday, the low round of the tournament. Duke’s Brinson Paolini (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) finished alone in fifth place at 5-under 211. Florida State was led by Drew Kittleson (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.), who shot a 4-under par 212 to tie with Clemson’s Corbin Mills (So., Anderson, S.C.). Virginia’s Ben Kohles (Jr., Cary, N.C.) tied for eighth place (3-under 213) and was the Cavalier’s leading scorer. Kohles tied with the Yellow Jackets James White (Jr., Acworth, Ga.). North Carolina was led by Michael McGowan (So., Southern Pines, N. C.) who tied for 10th place at 2-under par 214 along with Wake Forest’s John Varol (Fr., Waxhaw, N.C.) and Florida State’s Brooks Koepka (Jr., Wellington, Fla.). Three players were tied for 13th place at 1-under 215 – NC State’s Albin Choi (Fr., Toronto, Ontario) and Mitchell Sutton (So., London, Ontario) and Virginia Teh’s Blake Redmond (Jr., Sugarland, Tex.) Maryland was led by Will Wiseman (So., Salisbury, Md.) who tied for 30th place at 222. Boston College was led by John Nurczynski (Jr., Newtonville, Mass.) who tied for 33rd with a 223 total.
